Chercheur En Biogéochimie Des Hydrosystèmes Tropicaux H/F

Postdoctoral researcher position (24-month contract, expected start 1 April 2027) at the Centre de Recherche et d'Enseignement des Géosciences de l'Environnement (CEREGE) in Aix-en-Provence, France, with the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD). The researcher will contribute to the new GHG-STREAMS programme on greenhouse gas (GHG) dynamics in tropical aquatic systems (rivers and wetlands), which will set up a new aquatic GHG observatory in Kenya combining high-frequency monitoring, regional field campaigns and spatial modelling. The Kenyan component is developed with the Technical University of Kenya and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany).

Key questions: How do land use and hydrological events regulate GHG dynamics in tropical hydrosystems? How can natural and anthropogenic GHG sources be distinguished? How can local measurements be scaled up to regional estimates relevant for carbon budgets?

Responsibilities (under the supervision of Clément Duvert, IRD/CEREGE):
- Deploy a high-frequency monitoring network with sensors for dissolved CO2, oxygen, conductivity and hydrological variables
- Coordinate field campaigns in Kenya
- Develop approaches to quantify GHG emissions, identify their drivers and extrapolate observations to larger spatial scales
- Lead data analysis and publication of results
- Contribute to supervising PhD and master's students involved in the project

Requirements:
- PhD (obtained less than 3 years before start, or being finalised) in environmental science, hydrology, hydrogeology, (bio)geochemistry or similar
- Experience in field data acquisition
- Quantitative skills and proficiency in R, Python or MATLAB
- Experience publishing in international journals
- Interest in research in the Global South and in long field campaigns

Desirable: tropical field experience; GHG measurement in hydrosystems; isotopic tracers and/or groundwater–river interactions; spatial modelling and remote sensing; French proficiency or willingness to learn.

Benefits include 32 days of leave plus 13 RTT days, meal vouchers or collective catering, partial remote work (1–3 days per week) and a complementary social protection contract. Salary according to IRD pay scales.
