This fixed-term (CDD) engineer position, running until 31/01/2028, is attached to the UMR MIO (Mediterranean Institute of Oceanography) in Marseille, within the ERC Proof of Concept project SMART-OCEAN, linked to the ERC Consolidator project HOPE. The project develops and operates a smart ocean platform for autonomous, real-time acquisition of physical, biological and biogeochemical parameters in open-sea environments. The role involves regular interaction with project engineers and researchers, technical teams from DT-INSU and IMEV, and private partners. Teleworking of 1 to 3 days per week is possible.
Main responsibilities:
1. Technological developments planned in SMART-OCEAN: implement Axis 3 (network architecture of the platform) while minimising buoy downtime; liaise with the company HEXA-H/OcTech on the remotely programmable Intelligent Case Unit and real-time data transmission from the profiler cage; take part in technical exchanges with DT-INSU on autonomous recharging of the smart housing on the buoy.
2. Programme the Siemens PLC of the smart buoy: train in Siemens PLC programming, run tests and developments on the onshore test PLC, and carry out onshore and at-sea tests of the new 250 m winch.
3. Monthly remote retrieval and backup of HOPE platform data from each buoy sensor to a dedicated NAS.
4. Develop data visualisation and diagnostic tools for the HOPE buoy: design and install emerged and immersed onboard cameras for real-time visual monitoring; ensure shore transmission and visualisation of nitrate, phosphate and fluorometer data; design near-real-time visualisation of profiler-cage CTD data.
5. Secondary activities: technical support for continuous operation of the HOPE platform and its embedded instruments (autonomous profiling winch every 4h until April 2027; CTDs, DNA autosampler, CytoSense, UVP, nutrient analysers, fluorometer, weather station, ADCP).
Profile: scientific instrumentation and embedded electronics; industrial computing and networks; scientific data management and archiving; knowledge of environmental sensors appreciated; ability to work in a marine environment. Qualities: rigour, organisation, curiosity for innovative technology, team spirit, reactivity to technical issues, progressive autonomy.
