Associate Scientific Officer, P.2 (Fixed-Term - 1 Year)

This position is located in the Atmospheric Composition & Environmental Services (ACES) Section of the Science, Services and Capacity Development (SSCD) Department. The Associate Scientific Officer supporting Atmospheric Composition - Sand and Dust Storm (AC-SDS) activities will report to the Scientific Officer of the ACES and contribute to atmospheric composition activities under the Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) Programme, specifically supporting the Sand and Dust Storm Warning Advisory and Assessment System (SDS-WAS) initiative.

Duties: Support the implementation and coordination of SDS-WAS activities within the GAW Programme, including organising expert-group meetings (SDS-WAS global steering committee and regional nodes/centres); coordinating scientific and technical reports, guidance documents, training materials and policy-relevant products; assisting preparation of the annual Airborne dust bulletin; and organising international conferences and technical workshops. Assist in advancing Early Warning Systems for Sand and Dust Storms through improved scientific coordination, forecasting, observational integration and capacity building, including training events under the SDS-WAS Trust Fund and outreach/communication activities. Support reporting of SDS-WAS activities including representation of WMO within the UN Coalition for Combating Sand and Dust Storms.

Education: Master's degree or equivalent in Atmospheric Sciences (a first-level degree plus two years additional relevant experience may substitute). Experience: minimum two years of relevant professional experience in scientific/technical project management, including reporting and communication of scientific results; financial monitoring and donor compliance; organising multi-stakeholder meetings and international partnerships; working across multi-disciplinary/inter-agency teams; knowledge of aerosol science or atmospheric modelling a plus. Excellent English required; Arabic an advantage.

Salary: Annual net base salary US$ 56,046 plus post adjustment US$ 48,648. Fixed-term, 1 year, funded from extra-budgetary funding.
